Trushar Sarang is the Volunteer of the Month for June
Like one of Willy Wonka's most talented inventors, Trushar has worked his magic behind the scenes, contributing more than 100 hours to help transform the stage into a delightfully whimsical, Wonka-worthy chocolate factory right here in Manassas.
From imaginative set construction to countless behind-the-scenes tasks, his dedication, craftsmanship, and enthusiasm have been truly extraordinary. Like many parents of our young actors, Trushar has jumped into the chocolate lagoon with both feet and has been an extraordinary production assistant.
Although this is Trushar's very first production with PWLT, he's already become an invaluable part of our theatre family—and we hope this is just the beginning of many more adventures together! PWLT sat down with Trushar before rehearsals to discuss his involvement.
How long have you been involved as an "arts" parent?
Almost 3 years. This is Alan and Ani's 7th musical production since October 2023.
What has your family experience been like with Alan and Ani being so deeply involved?
It is exciting to see Alan and Ani perform and grow with each performance. Not having a theater background myself, I learn so many new things from every musical we are a part of--including from the production staff and all the other parents and actors. We both get to see the diversity of directors, music teachers, and choreographers that challenge our kids and help them grow as artists and people. Every time I see them on stage, I am amazed at their talent and I am excited to see how happy and confident they are.
How have you become involved behind the scenes?
In other productions, I have usually helped with props. I have always admired Vince's other set designs, so I decided to help with sets for the first time in an effort to learn from the master. Under his tutelage, I have helped build and paint the set pieces.
What has your experience been like working with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory crew?
The first time we came to the PWLT's auditions, the crew and staff were so welcoming and encouraging. We were immediately greeted at the door, given nametags (for the auditioners), and directed where to go and what to expect. The environment was so friendly that it really took the pressure off of everyone.
The story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is so imaginative and thoughtful, it has been very exciting bringing the sets to life! The set pieces are massive and have to be believed to be seen! Tom, the master carpenter, is amazing at bringing Vince's vision to the stage. Tom and Vince are both incredibly hard working and really care about making this musical a success.
Vince, as the director, is excellent at working with kids and adults. My kids love his ability to relate to them, make jokes, and teach them how to act. Vince has an amazing ability to direct an entire cast while letting each person express their own character. The atmosphere has been extremely positive and I am looking forward to working on future productions.
The choreographers are ambitious and so imaginative--my kids are challenged with every new dance they learn. The kids have so much fun at rehearsals with the production staff and cast and there is a very team-like, family atmosphere. Communication with the production team has been excellent with well-written comprehensive emails with all the information we need.
What do you do when not being an involved parent?
I enjoy board games, computer games, and chess. I love going to see musicals, travelling, and planning our next Disney adventure!
